Jake Krack,
Calhoun County fiddler was awarded the Red Foley Memorial Music
Award at Berea College April 27, 2006. The Red Foley Award,
established in 1970, recognizes talented Berea students for their
musical contribution to the social life of the campus community. It
is also intended to help the recipient in a professional music
career, if he or she so desires. This award is intended to promote
the kind of music associated with Red Foley's career- such as folk,
country, bluegrass, gospel and popular music. It was established in
memory of country music star Red Foley, who attended the Berea

long-time friend and manager. Jake is now an Alumni of Berea

Passing the Music Down
author:Sarah Sullivan illustrator:Barry Root
A young boy travels to the hills of
Appalachia to meet the old-time fiddle player whose music he
has admired, and so sparks a friendship that will forge a
bond between generations. The boy develops under the man’s
care and instruction, just as seedlings grow with spring
rain and summer sun. From playing on the front porch to
performing at folk festivals, the two carry on the tradition
of passing the music down. This touching, lyrical story,
inspired by the lives of renowned fiddlers Melvin Wine and
Jake Krack, includes an author’s note and suggested
resources for learning about the musicians and the music
they love.
Jake will be teaching
Advanced/Fiddle @ The 16th Annual Allegheny Echoes June 24-29, 2012
We will
celebrate our 30th convention in high style, with guests from the
U.S. of A. Jake Krack and the Bing brothers, who (as the Whoopin' Hollar
Band) won the traditional band contest at the 2010 and 2011 Galax Old
Fiddlers' Convention.
Jake Krack is the hottest young fiddler around, taking out
1st place at Galax (for the 5th time), and winning best performer of
the Convention (for the 4th time), although he had crashed his
motor-bike and had a punctured lung and broken ribs .
Tim Bing is my favourite banjo player and Mike
Bing is no slouch on mandolin. With them
comes Tim Corbett on double bass, and Bob Lieving on guitar- the
whole band! It will be a great way to celebrate 30 years of Yarra
Junction.
Thanks to the Camp Eureka Working Collective and Alleghaney Echoes
for funding most of the fares - we need to come up with enough to
reimburse the boys for the rest!
